$139 a year. That’s Amazon Prime.

Most people I know use it for exactly one thing. Boxes show up in two days, and they never think about it again. If that’s you, the pitch writes itself: you’re donating money to Amazon.

I was going to write this article as a lecture. Then I audited my own account and found I use five of the nine benefits below — shipping, grocery delivery sometimes, photos, ebooks, music. So much for the lecture.

But I still found money leaking out of my budget. Not from the benefits I’m ignoring. From one I’m actually using, every day, while paying a second company to do the same job.

More on that at the end. First, the math problem nobody in this genre wants to admit to.

The $1,430 problem

Every “hidden Prime benefits” article eventually reaches for the same statistic: a J.P. Morgan analyst estimated the total value of a Prime membership at roughly $1,430 a year, about ten times the $139 you pay.

That number is real, and it’s also useless to you.

Here’s how it gets built. Take every benefit. Look up what it costs as a standalone product. Add them up.

And I haven’t priced Prime Reading, Amazon Music, or Luna yet. Keep stacking and you clear $700 without trying hard.

Against $139, that looks like a steal. It’s also nonsense, and I’ll show you why after we go through what’s actually in the box.

Tier 1: The three with a real price tag

These are the ones where Amazon sells the identical thing to non-members, so we know exactly what it’s worth on the open market.

1. Alexa+ — $19.99/month, free with Prime

This is the biggest number in the entire membership and almost nobody knows it landed.

In February 2026, Amazon launched Alexa+, the generative-AI rebuild of Alexa, at $19.99/month for non-members — and included at no extra cost with Prime. That’s $239.88 a year of sticker value. It works across Echo devices, Fire TV, the Alexa app, and Alexa.com. Non-Prime users get a stripped-down free chat tier; device access requires Prime or the $19.99 plan.

For scale: that’s roughly what ChatGPT Plus or Gemini’s paid tier costs. If you’re a Prime member paying for one of those separately, it’s at least worth knowing you already own a competitor.

My honest use: I have an Echo next to my desk. I use it to play music and to tell me when a package hits my door. That is maybe five percent of what Alexa+ can do. I’m not going to pretend otherwise.

The catch: US-only right now.

2. Grubhub+ — $9.99/month, free with Prime

Prime members get a free Grubhub+ membership, normally $9.99/month, for as long as they stay Prime. That’s $0 delivery fees on eligible orders, lower service fees, and 5% back in credit on pickup orders.

This started as a one-year promo back in 2022 and Amazon made it an ongoing benefit in 2024. It is not a trial that’s about to expire on you.

The catch: Orders have to clear a minimum subtotal before the $0 delivery kicks in, and it varies by restaurant. “Free delivery” still means you’re paying service fees and tip. Grubhub advertises average savings of $336/year for active members — treat that like any company-supplied savings number, which is to say, it describes people who order delivery constantly.

3. Gas — 10¢ per gallon

This is the one that surprises people, and it’s the most honest number in the whole membership because Amazon publishes a realistic estimate instead of a fantasy one.

Prime members save 10 cents per gallon at roughly 7,500 bp, Amoco, and participating ampm and Thorntons stations. You link your Amazon account to earnify, bp’s rewards app, then enter your phone number at the pump. All fuel grades, no minimum or maximum.

Amazon’s own estimate: nearly $70 a year for a typical driver. That’s half your membership fee, from gas alone.

Amazon also runs periodic boosts on top. Over the July 2–5 weekend this year it went to 50¢/gallon for one fill-up, and there was a “Fuel Up Fridays” 20¢ run in the spring.

The catch: It’s worth exactly $0 if there’s no bp or Amoco on your commute. Check a map before you count this one.

Tier 2: The four that could replace a bill you already pay

This is where the real money is, and where I got caught.

4. Amazon Photos — unlimited photo storage

Prime includes unlimited, full-resolution photo storage, plus 5 GB for video. Non-members get 5 GB total for everything.

Full resolution matters. This isn’t a compressed-copy deal.

The catch: “Unlimited” covers photos only. Videos and other files count against that 5 GB, which a couple of 4K clips of your kid will eat instantly. More video storage starts at $1.99/month for 100 GB.

My honest use — and my expensive mistake: I use Amazon Photos. I also still pay for iCloud. Every month.

Why? Because eight years of photos and videos already live in iCloud, and moving them feels like a weekend I’ll never get back. So I’m paying Apple to store the same memories Amazon would hold for free, and I’ve been doing it long enough that the “I’ll deal with it later” has cost me real money.

That’s not a Prime problem. That’s a switching-cost trap, and it’s the single most common way I see people lose money on subscriptions. The benefit was free the whole time. I just already had a habit.

5. Prime Reading — 10 books at a time

A rotating catalog of ebooks, magazines, comics, and some audiobooks. You can borrow up to 10 titles at a time, and here’s the part libraries can’t match: there are no due dates. Keep a book as long as you want; return it when you need a slot.

My honest use: I have a Kindle, and whenever something in finance or personal growth shows up in the catalog, I grab it and read it. This is one of the five I actually use.

The catch: The catalog rotates and it is not the new-release bestseller list. If you want a specific recent book, this won’t have it — that’s what Kindle Unlimited is for, and that’s a separate paid subscription.

6. Amazon Music — with an asterisk you need to read

Prime includes 100 million songs ad-free, thousands of playlists and stations, and the largest catalog of ad-free top podcasts.

Now the asterisk, because this is where most articles quietly lie to you: for the main catalog, you’re mostly in shuffle mode. Pick an artist, album, or playlist and Amazon plays a mix based on it rather than the exact track you chose. On-demand song picking and offline downloads are limited to curated “All-Access Playlists.” Full on-demand control means upgrading to Amazon Music Unlimited at $11.99/month.

So anyone stacking “Amazon Music Unlimited: $143.88/year” into a Prime value calculation is inflating the number. Prime doesn’t include Unlimited.

What’s genuinely underrated here: the podcasts. Amazon owns Wondery, and Prime includes ad-free access to a large chunk of that catalog. If you listen to podcasts daily and you’re paying for an ad-free podcast tier somewhere else, that’s a real bill you might be able to kill.

My honest use: I listen through the Echo at my desk. Shuffle mode is fine for background music while I work. It would drive me crazy if I wanted a specific song.

7. Prime Video — and the ad situation got worse

Thousands of movies and shows. Right now that includes Project Hail Mary, which hit Prime Video on July 3, 2026 at no extra cost after a $683 million theatrical run — plus the usual anchors like The Boys and Invincible.

The catch, and it’s a growing one: Prime Video shows ads by default now. Getting rid of them costs extra, and that price went up this year. As of April 10, 2026, the ad-free tier was rebranded “Prime Video Ultra” and raised to $4.99/month, up from $2.99. So ad-free viewing is now roughly $60/year on top of your $139.

Amazon says Prime’s own price didn’t change. Technically true. Functionally, the thing you were buying got a little worse unless you pay more.

Tier 3: The two that probably won’t save you a dollar

8. Amazon Luna — the games benefit that quietly got big

Prime Gaming got folded into Luna, and the library is much better than its reputation. Prime members get access to titles like Hogwarts Legacy, EA Sports FC 26, and Indiana Jones and the Great Circle, plus GameNight party games like Clue and Ticket to Ride for family play, with new games added monthly. LEGO Indiana Jones: The Original Adventures joined the Luna Standard channel this month.

Amazon also just added a Games tab directly inside the Prime Video app, so you don’t have to know Luna exists to stumble into it.

My honest use: none. I don’t really play games anymore. I’m including this because a shocking number of Prime members have no idea it’s in there, and if you have kids old enough for LEGO games, that’s a rainy Saturday you already paid for. Those LEGO Star Wars and Indiana Jones games were my favorites growing up, so I’ll admit I was tempted.

The catch: Luna stopped supporting the “bring your own library” links to outside storefronts — the GOG partnership ended June 10, 2026. This is a curated catalog now, not a way to stream games you own elsewhere.

9. Prescriptions — the one I have to be straight with you about

This benefit gets listed constantly as “cheap prescriptions with Prime,” and there are two things wrong with that.

First, it isn’t free. Amazon’s RxPass is a $5/month subscription on top of Prime. For that flat $5 you get unlimited fills of 50-plus common generic medications with free delivery. It isn’t insurance, and it can’t be combined with insurance. If you take several generics from that list, $5 flat can genuinely beat a stack of copays. If you take one cheap generic, a discount card or a $4 generic list may already beat it.

Second, and this is the part nobody mentions: it doesn’t work everywhere. Per Amazon’s own help pages, RxPass cannot ship medications to California or Washington. I live in Washington. I could not sign up for this if I wanted to.

So here’s my honest disclosure: I get my prescriptions through Costco, my insurance makes them cheap, and between that and my state I am the worst possible person to tell you whether RxPass is a good deal. I’m not going to run a comparison I can’t actually make. Check the eligible-drug list and your own state against what you pay today, and trust that over any blog — including this one.

Regular Amazon Pharmacy still operates in the states where RxPass doesn’t. It’s only the flat-fee subscription that’s blocked.

Now the part where I undo my own math

Go back to that $561 table.

Every one of those numbers is real. And the total is still fiction, because sticker value is not your value.

Alexa+ is “worth” $239.88 a year only if you would genuinely hand Amazon $19.99 a month for it. I wouldn’t. I use it as a music player and a package announcer. Its honest value to me is a few dollars a month, not twenty.

This is the same trap as my four-year AirPods cost-per-use review, just inverted. There I argued a premium price becomes a bargain when you divide by real use. Here’s the other edge of that blade: a feature you don’t use is worth zero no matter what the price tag says. Unused features are the most expensive kind.

So throw out sticker value and run the only test that matters:

Which line item on my actual bank statement could I cancel tomorrow, because Prime already does that job?

Not “what’s it worth.” What can you stop paying for. That number shows up in your account. The $1,430 never will.

My audit, and it’s embarrassing

I ran it on myself. Here’s the honest result:

• Alexa+ — wouldn’t pay $19.99/mo for it. Cancel value: $0
• Grubhub+ — I don’t order delivery enough to matter. $0
• Gas — worth checking whether there’s a bp on my commute. Currently claiming $0
• Amazon Photos — I use it and still pay iCloud. $0 saved. This is the one that stings
• Prime Reading — I use it, but I wasn’t paying for Kindle Unlimited before. $0
• Amazon Music — replaces nothing; I wasn’t paying Spotify. $0
• Prime Video — could I cancel Netflix or Disney+? Possibly, if I had no preferences. But I do. Realistically, probably not
• Luna — don’t game. $0
• RxPass — can’t buy it in my state. $0

Total I could realistically cancel today: nothing.

That’s the honest answer, and it’s the opposite of the article I sat down to write.

But read it carefully, because “I can’t cancel anything” is not the same as “Prime is a waste.” I use five of these nine benefits regularly. If Amazon deleted them tomorrow I’d miss them, and some I’d end up paying for. Prime earns its $139 from me — it just earns it through shipping, groceries, and entertainment I actually consume, not through a $1,430 pile of features I’d never buy.

The waste in my budget wasn’t the four benefits I ignore. It was the one I use while paying Apple to do the same job. Nine benefits audited, and the only real money on the table was a duplicate subscription I’d been renewing on autopilot for years.

Go look at your own storage bill. That’s my actual advice.

Who should just cancel Prime

Someone has to say this in an article like this one.

Cancel if: you order from Amazon a handful of times a year, you don’t watch Prime Video, and you have no Echo devices. Standard shipping on a few orders won’t beat $139, and none of the tier-2 benefits will save you money if you weren’t paying for those categories anyway.

And the thing nobody selling you a membership will mention: frictionless one-click ordering is designed to increase your spending. If Prime makes you buy things you’d otherwise skip, the membership can cost you far more than $139 a year, and none of the benefits above will dig you out of that.

The membership is a tool. Whether it pays off is a question about your behavior, not about Amazon’s feature list.

I write about money, so let me start with a confession: I don’t buy many gadgets. Most fail my cost-per-use test — divide the price by honest, realistic uses, and suddenly that shiny thing costs $5 every time you touch it.

AirPods Pro are the exception. I’ve been using my AirPods Pro 2 for at least four years, and they are a daily essential — at work, and especially at the gym.

Why they earned a permanent spot in my pocket

The noise cancellation genuinely works. Open office, gym at peak hour, airplane, kids at full volume in the next room during a work call — flip on ANC and the world politely steps back. After four years, this is the feature I’d pay for twice.

They fit right into your ear and stay there. Despite the look — and yes, I know the look — they’re comfortable for hours, and they don’t budge during workouts. I’ve done four years of gym sessions with these and never once chased an earbud across the floor.

If you have an iPhone, this is a must-have in your pocket. The pairing, the auto-switching between devices, the find-my-earbud when one vanishes into the couch — the Apple ecosystem glue is the part reviews undersell and daily life oversells.

The cost-per-use math

This is a money blog, so let’s do it properly. Four years of near-daily use is well over 1,200 uses. Even at premium-earbud pricing, that’s pennies per use — and mine are still going. Compare that to cheap earbuds replaced every year, and the “expensive” option is the frugal one. This is the same buy-once logic as my Vitamix: frequency of use is what turns a premium price into a bargain.

Buying today? Two ways to go

My Pro 2s are old enough that if you’re buying now, you’re choosing between two current models. Here’s the honest decision:

AirPods Pro 3 — the full experience

The current top model, and the successor to what I’ve loved for four years: active noise cancellation, spatial audio, high-fidelity sound, USB-C — plus a genuinely new generation of features: live translation, heart rate sensing during workouts, and a hearing aid capability.

Who it’s for: if ANC is the point (gym, office, travel, parenting), get the Pro. That’s the feature my four years say is worth paying for. The heart-rate sensing also makes it interesting if you work out with them anyway — one less reason to need a watch at the gym.

AirPods 4 — the essentials, for less

The standard model, meaningfully upgraded: Apple’s H2 chip, personalized spatial audio, sweat and water resistance, USB-C case, and up to 30 hours of total battery life with the case. The classic open-ear AirPods fit rather than the sealed ear tips.

Who it’s for: you mostly listen in quiet-ish places, you prefer the open fit (some people never get comfortable with silicone tips), or you want the iPhone ecosystem magic without paying for ANC you won’t use. No shame in that — unused features are the most expensive kind.

The one-line decision

Noise cancellation matters to your daily life → Pro 3. It doesn’t → AirPods 4 and pocket the difference. Either way, if you’re an iPhone user who’ll wear them daily, the cost-per-use math is about as safe as gadget purchases get.

Four years in, mine are still the first thing I grab after my keys and wallet. Not many purchases can say that.

Prices change constantly on Amazon, so I don’t quote them — check the links for current pricing. My hands-on experience is with the AirPods Pro 2; the model details above come from Apple’s current listings. As always: my experience, not a command to spend money.

Costco sells two consumer memberships: Gold Star at $65 a year, and Executive at $130. The Executive tier is just Gold Star plus a $65 upgrade, and what you get for that $65 is a 2% annual reward on qualifying purchases, paid out as a certificate you redeem in warehouse.

So the entire decision is one division problem.

The break-even is $3,250

You need the 2% reward to cover the $65 upgrade:

$65 ÷ 0.02 = $3,250 a year, or about $271 a month in qualifying spend.

Below that, the upgrade costs you money. Above it, every dollar is 2% off. At $6,000 of annual spend you get $120 back — a net $55 gain. At $10,000 you get $200, netting $135.

There’s a ceiling too: the reward caps at $1,250 per year, which you’d hit at $62,500 of qualifying spend. If you’re running a small business through your membership, that cap is the number to know. For a household, it’s not a real constraint.

The part that breaks most people’s math: gas doesn’t count

This is where I had it wrong, and it’s worth stating plainly because it moves the break-even for a lot of families.

Costco gas does not earn the 2% reward. Fuel is excluded. If you’ve been mentally counting a $60 fill-up twice a month toward your $271, remove it — that’s $1,440 a year that looks like qualifying spend and isn’t.

Gas isn’t the only exclusion. The reward also skips:

• Food court — the hot dog stays $1.50 and earns nothing
• Tobacco, and alcohol in certain states
• Costco Shop Cards (gift cards), postage stamps, and prescriptions
• Membership fees themselves, plus taxes, deposits, and miscellaneous fees

One more that catches people: only purchases made by the primary member or the primary household cardholder count. If someone else on the account does a chunk of the shopping on their own card, that spend doesn’t accrue to your reward.

So the honest version of the break-even is $3,250 of merchandise — groceries, household goods, tires, optical, Costco Travel. Not $3,250 of everything you hand Costco money for.

Who actually clears it

A family doing a real weekly grocery run at Costco clears $271 a month without trying — that’s roughly $65 a trip, which is a light cart. If Costco is where your household food budget lives, you’re almost certainly past break-even already.

Where it gets marginal:

• You shop monthly, not weekly. Four $150 trips a year plus gas is nowhere near $3,250 in merchandise.
• You’re a one- or two-person household. Bulk pricing works against you; you buy less because you can’t store or eat it fast enough.
• Costco is mostly your gas station. Very common, and it’s exactly the case the exclusion kills. The fuel savings are real, but they’re a Gold Star benefit too — you don’t need Executive for them.
• You have a big one-time year. Appliances, a mattress, tires — a $4,000 year gets you $80, but don’t renew on the strength of a year that won’t repeat.

The reason it’s nearly risk-free to try

Here’s the detail that makes this an unusually low-stakes decision: if your 2% reward comes in under the $65 upgrade fee, Costco will refund the difference. Ask at the membership counter.

That means your genuine downside is capped at roughly zero — you’re out the float on $65 for a year and nothing else. It also means the “am I sure I clear $3,250?” question doesn’t need a confident answer. You can just run the year and find out, which is what I’d rather do than estimate my own grocery spend from memory, because I’d estimate it badly.

The one thing that isn’t automatic: you have to redeem the certificate. It arrives with your renewal notice and it’s only good in warehouse, within the redemption window. An unredeemed reward is a $120 rounding error you gifted back.

The one-line decision

Costco is your main grocery store → upgrade, and let the refund guarantee cover you if you’re wrong. Costco is where you buy gas and the occasional bulk item → stay Gold Star.

Check one thing before you decide: pull up last year’s Costco spending in your bank or card app and subtract the gas. That’s your real number. Mine surprised me in both directions the first time I actually looked instead of guessing.

Fees and reward terms are current as of publication and Costco changes them — the Gold Star and Executive fees last moved in 2024. Exclusions vary somewhat by state, especially on alcohol. Verify the current terms at the membership counter or on Costco’s site before you decide. My math, not advice for your household.
